T-shirts Blooming with Flowers

This is a very quick and easy DIY, and the result are these adorable flower hair pins.

I got this idea when I wanted to recycle a couple of t-shirts I was about to throw away. I was inspired by a flower clip that I already have. These are really cute to add to buns or to pin your hair back. If any of these instructions are confusing, watch my tutorial video on my Youtube channel diysbymegid, linked here.

Here is the inspiration!

To make one flower pin you will need:

-A t-shirt you will not mind cutting up 

-Glue sticks

-A glue gun

-Very sharp scissors (It is best to use fabric scissors because they are easier to cut the t-shirt with, but I could not find mine when I was filming this and, my regular scissors worked fine)

-Paper (You will use this to draw your pattern for the petals so you only need a small square- mine was about 2.5"x2.5")

-A drawing utensil (I used a Sharpie®)

-A small piece of felt (You will need to cut a small circle- mine was 1.5" in diameter, and a tiny triangle- around 1cm at the base. If you are making this a hair tie flower, you will need another felt circle instead of the triangle.)

-A bobby pin, clip, or hair tie

You will first need to cut a circle (1.5" in diameter) and small triangle out of the felt. These will be what you use to glue the t-shirt petals onto, and to connect the bobby pin or clip to.

If you are making this a hair tie, cut out another felt circle instead of a triangle out of the felt. Then glue the hair tie across the diameter of the first felt circle, run glue along the outside, and place the second felt circle on top.

Next, make the petal pattern, which is a flower. Use the paper to draw a flower with five petals, and cut it out.

I first cut out a 2.5" wide strip from the t-shirt using the pattern as a guide to see how long I needed it to be. Then you can fold the strip so you can cut multiple at a time.

The bottom piece is the seam of the t-shirt that I cut off (it is not needed)

Fold the strip like an accordion into a stack (I cut mine 4 and 5 at a time)

Once you are done cutting out all 9 flowers, plug in your glue gun, you are all ready to fold your flowers into petals! Take each of the flowers and fold them in half.

Then, put a small dot of glue in the middle of the folded flower, and fold it again. Each of these is a petal. There will be 2 layers of petals, so each one is 1/4 of a layer.

For the center of the flower, fold the flower in half, but instead of putting a dot of glue in the middle, place a line of glue on one half of the folded flower (In the picture, it is the purple outlined part).

Roll the edge up while adding little dots of glue to the base, it will make a cone shape.

Make a triangle of glue for each of the petals and place them on the circle of felt.

To add the second layer of petals, make "V" glue lines in the middle of the first layer of petals. 

The purple is where the second layer petal goes, the blue dotted lines show the first layer of petals.

When you have place the second layer of petals on, put a dot of glue in the center and place the cone on top so it sticks out of the middle.

Glue around the base of the center and then bring the second layer of petals up to meet the center. Fluff up all of the layers around the center.

To attach the bobby pin, first slide the triangle of felt onto the pin. 

The bobby pin will stay better if you add a drop of glue to the top before sliding the pin all the way up.

Make a triangle of glue on the felt on the back of the flower.

Place the felt triangle onto the glue to secure it on the back. You can add glue around the edges to make it more secure.

For the flower hair tie, you just have to glue the petals onto the felt circles attached to the hair tie.
